Eternal youth

Recently, researchers at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) announced that they had discovered "eternal youth." They identified several genes that control the production of what are called mitochondrial proteins. The proteins are part of the mitochondria, which are the energy centers of our cells. By manipulating these genes, the life of a laboratory mouse was extended by 50 percent and that of a ringworm by a third. This could make it possible to extend human life and, in particular, increase the number of years of healthy life.
Of course, it will take many years of time and research before this discovery can actually lead to "eternal youth", and by then we will already be very old. In addition, the unwanted effects of genetic manipulation are still far from clear.
Interestingly, an amazing study was published in 2008 showing that strength training not only stops the aging process, but actually reverses it! Or in other words, that strength training enables genetic rejuvenation. A group of 25 70-year-olds saw dramatic improvements in muscle strength after six months of short but intense training. Additionally, the genetic structures of muscle tissue were improved and rejuvenated in a variety of ways. Other studies have shown that the biological function of mitochondria improves through intensive strength training, in both young and old.
Even more surprising is that this research did not make the headlines. Strength training is perhaps less exciting than manipulating a gene. Yet it is safe and you do not have to wait for the results of years of research if you want to rejuvenate your body. You can simply train your muscles - with the right guidance, of course!
